Tips for maintaining Stainless Steel Countertops and Tables

Although it is very difficult, it is possible to create a "stain" on stainless steel. The type (or grade) of stainless steel only affects its resistance to rust, corrosion, and oxidation. Certain chemicals, if they are allowed to fully dry on the surface may cause a subtle discolouration. This discolouration or "stain" will settle into the topmost layer of the material. It is possible to remove this discolouration by polishing the surface with a Scotch-Briteā„¢ General Purpose Hand Pad (7447B). Always wipe, clean, and polish in the direction of the grain. To avoid any discolouration always wipe down the stainless steel surface after use with a clean lint free cloth or paper towel. Below find a list of foods, drinks, and cleaners which through our experience cause discolouration:

  • Dark Coffee (if left to dry)
  • Dark Tea (if left to dry)
  • Tomato, Tomato Juice (if left to dry)
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Oven Cleaner
  • Floor Cleaner
  • Tile Cleaner

** Always test an small inconspicious area with any cleaner before using **

Below find some general tips for maintaining stainless steel:

  • Always wipe down stainless steel surfaces with a mild detergent after use. Liquid dish soap is best.
  • Always wipe in the direction of the brush grain.
  • A lemon juice and vegetable oil mixture makes an excellent low cost stainless steel polish.
  • Use a diluted vinegar or liquid dish soap as a cleaner for your stainless steel.  Mix 1 parts vinegar to 5 parts water.
  • Bright Annealed (B.A.) diamond patterned (quilted) stainless steel should be cleaned with a standard glass cleaner for best results. Avoid greasy cleaners which leave a residue on the shiny diamond patterned (quilted) stainless steel. Always use a clean lint free cloth to prevent smudges and scratches.
  • Silver Star Metal Fabricating uses ZepĀ® Professional Strength Cleaners and Polishes.
  • Refrain from using any products that contain chlorine, ammonia, or harsh chemicals to clean any stainless steel.
  • Do not use steel wool or any abrasive cleaners. These will permanently scratch the finish and can even loosen and lodge in the stainless steel, rusting over time.
  • Do not drop heavy objects onto stainless steel counter tops and tables. Heavy objects may dent the stainless steel leaving a permanent mark. Instead place heavy objects gently with a soft cloth underneath to protect the finish from scratches.
  • Light scratches can be fixed fairly easily on stainless steel with a little instruction. For a detailed video on restoring a stainless steel #4 (brushed) finish click here.
  • Deep scratches in stainless steel can also be fixed but will require some more effort and tools. For a instructive video click here.
